A man who threatened to harm himself has been detained by police after officers surrounded a house in Cumbria.

Eyewitnesses said armed police in bullet-proof vests and riot shields were called to the house in Main Street, Flookburgh.

The street was closed by officers but was re-opened later.

Officers negotiated with the 36-year-old man who came out of the property at about 1550 BST. He was detained under the mental health act.

There were unconfirmed reports the man was armed during the incident, but police said they believed he did not have access to a firearm.
