Barrow 'gas explosion' caused by petrol in drains

It is now believed that an explosion in a Cumbrian town was caused by petrol in the drains.

Police and fire crews were called to the junction of Shakespeare Street and Dryden Street in Barrow on Friday night following reports of a gas explosion.

The area was cordoned off, and United Utilities also attended.

The fire service said petrol or a similar substance was likely to have been the cause. The road will remain closed until Monday.
