Burglar who raided 18 Lake District lodges jailed

A 49-year-old west Cumbria man who burgled 18 lodges in a single night at a Lake District holiday park has been jailed for five years.

Carlisle Crown Court heard how 12 televisions, bicycles and other items worth a total of £25,000 were taken from Limefitt Park near Windermere.

Maurice Smith, of Town Croft, Dearham, had denied 18 charges of burglary but was found guilty after a trial.

The burglaries took place 20 January last year during the closed season.

Judge Paul Batty said they were carried out with "military precision."

He also said he did not think Smith had acted alone but was the most "prominent" member of a gang.
