Plan for £7.2m Barrow care home unveiled

More details about plans for a £7.2m care home in Barrow have been announced as part of a reorganisation of care in the area.

Cumbria County Council has opted to build the 60-bed home on the site of the council-owned George Basterfield House, in Risedale Road.

It is one of four homes which is being replaced by the new building.

The council said the homes involved in the closure are no longer suitable for providing care for older people.

A plan for relocating residents in the affected care homes has been drawn up.

If planning permission is granted, construction work is expected to start in late Spring 2012 with the home scheduled to open in 2013.

Included in the reorganisation has been the closure of West Point House, on Walney Island.

Savings from the closure will be used to help people to continue to live in their own homes with equipment such as sensors and alarms.

A £5m extra care housing facility has been built on Holker Street.
