The family of a man who died during the Great North Swim has paid tribute to him.

Craig Murphy was taking part in the event on Windermere on Saturday when the alarm was raised by support staff travelling alongside the swimmers.

The 46-year-old, from Carlisle, was airlifted to hospital but pronounced dead on arrival. An inquest has been opened and adjourned.

His family said in a statement that they were devastated by his death.

The statement added: "He loved the outdoors and died doing something that he enjoyed."

About 10,000 people had signed up for the three-day event which involves half-mile, one-mile and two-mile swims.

On Sunday, a man in his 60s stopped breathing after suffering from a suspected heart attack.

He was resuscitated and airlifted to hospital in a critical condition, but is now said to be much improved.
