Plans for a new £10m community hospital and £4m GP-led health centre in Cumbria have been approved.

The hospital in Cockermouth will replace the 100-year-old Isel Road building, and the health centre has been earmarked for nearby Cleator Moor.

NHS Northwest said both schemes had been given stage one business approval and final approval was expected from Allerdale Council in the autumn.

Work on both schemes is expected to begin before the end of the year.

A spokesman for NHS Northwest said: "Both new health facilities will replace ageing buildings and help clinicians deliver better care to patients."
