Free parking plan to boost shopping in Penrith

Motorists could be allowed to park for free in a Cumbrian town temporarily to try to boost trade.

Eden District Council is considering the move to encourage shoppers who are being put off coming into Penrith because of current roadworks.

It is considering introducing free Friday parking in August and a cheaper £1 hourly fee in the Sandgate and Bluebell Lane car parks in September.

Traffic is being disrupted while two new supermarkets are built.
