Free parking on Fridays is to be introduced in a Cumbrian town throughout August in a bid to boost trade.

The scheme is to encourage shoppers who are being put off coming into Penrith because of ongoing roadworks.

Eden District Council has also approved a cheaper £1 hourly fee in the Sandgate and Bluebell Lane car parks, which will come into force in September.

Traffic is being disrupted while two new supermarkets are built.

A banner will be placed in the town centre to advertise the information.

Councillor Mike Tonkin, the council's environment portfolio holder, said: "We have listened to the views of local traders about the impact the current road works are having on their businesses."
