Wigton flood protection work starts

Work on a project to reduce the risk of flooding in a Cumbrian town is due to start next week.

The Environment Agency scheme for a flood storage basin in Wigton will involve building a 100m (328ft) long embankment on Wiza Beck.

Construction is expected to take up to 12 weeks and the footpath between Stubb Bridge and Barton Law will be closed.

The basin will be fitted with monitoring equipment so the agency can give flood warnings.
