Driver escapes from Askam pier-plunge car

A man is in hospital in Barrow after his car plunged off Askam pier in south Cumbria.

Cumbria Police said the vehicle fell into the River Duddon at Askam-in-Furness, shortly after 10:00 BST.

The driver managed to get out of the car and was pulled from the water by a member of the public.

The Coastguard from Millom and Walney Island, police and Duddon inshore rescue lifeboat were all called to the scene.

The driver was taken to Furness General Hospital, where his condition is currently not known.
