Dozens of sheep taken by rustlers in Cumbria

Dozens of sheep have been stolen in Cumbria, police said.

The group of 59 Swaledale sheep was taken from the Bampton area, near Shap, sometime in the last week.

All the animals have a large red W on their left hip and a T stamped on their horns.

In December last year, insurer NFU Mutual said the rising price of meat and the effects of the recession were behind an increase in sheep rustling in Cumbria and County Durham.

A Cumbria Police spokesman appealed for any witnesses or anyone with information to contact them.
