Success for Cumbria fire prevention work

The number of house fires in Cumbria has nearly halved over 10 years, figures show.

Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service has compiled figures from Fire Statistic Monitor reports.

House fires dropped from 542 per year to 287 over that period with casualties falling by 30%.

The service said it believed it was a result of its work in communities to prevent fires, such as home safety checks and work with schools.

Cumbria Chief Fire Officer Dominic Harrison said: "These 10-year figures are excellent and a testament to the work we carry out in communities in all parts of the county to lower the risks of fire."
