Keswick roadworks delayed to aid tourism

A utility company has postponed a road closure in a Cumbria town to avoid clashing with the half-term holiday.

Main Street in Keswick was due to shut for five weeks from Monday, to allow gas and water main work to be carried out.

But after listening to concerns from local people, United Utilities said it would now start on 31 October.

The company said this would allow tourists and traders to enjoy the town during the holiday period.

Caroline Brumwell, from United Utilities, said: "Although our work is essential we appreciate that it's inconvenient.

"We try to plan around Keswick's many important dates and will always do what we can to ease the strain on local people."
