Man died in Dubai fall after row with girlfriend

A Cumbrian man who died after falling 300ft (91m) from the balcony of his apartment in Dubai leapt to his death, an inquest was told.

Ryan Guest, 24, told girlfriend Louise Botham "I'm going" after a drunken row before plunging from his 32nd floor flat at Jumeirah Beach Resort.

Ms Botham, 30, said she did not think he meant to kill himself and that alcohol had been a "primary factor".

Post-mortem tests showed he died in July 2008 from multiple injuries.

The inquest at County Hall in Kendal, heard how Mr Guest was under stress from a heavy workload from his "high pressure job" working for an oil engineer.

They were also told that, although he did not have a drink problem, he was a "typical binge drinker" who used alcohol as a "massive stress relief".

'Full of life'

Giving evidence, Ms Botham said: ""He was very drunk, between being angry and upset.

"His mood was fluctuating. It was the first time we had ever argued."

She said moments before Mr Guest's death she had thrown gifts from him off the balcony and told him she was leaving the apartment and he would never see her again.

She said he "ran out to the balcony, jumped on the table and said 'I'm going'".

Ms Botham, from Cheshire, was arrested by police in Dubai following the death but was later released without charge.

"He was full of life. Everything he did had to be fun. He moved at a fast pace," said Mr Guest's parents, Keith and Frances.

Recording a narrative verdict, South Cumbria Deputy Coroner Shirley Evans said: "Ryan Guest died as a result of his own actions while not understanding their inevitable consequences because he was under the influence of alcohol."
