Man charged with 1983 Whitehaven rape

A man has been accused of the rape of a woman which took place 28 years ago, Cumbria Police have said.

Allison James Lithgow was charged after the attack was reinvestigated by detectives working on cold case reviews.

Mr Lithgow is alleged to have carried out the rape in Whitehaven, in 1983.

The 51-year-old, from Flatt Walks in the town, will appear before West Allerdale Magistrates' Court on 20 October.
