Three boys arrested after Kendal towpath sex attack

Three boys have been arrested in connection with a sexual assault on a 15-year-old girl in Cumbria.

The girl was attacked while walking along a canal towpath in Kendal, between Parkside Road and the leisure centre, on Saturday.

She was grabbed from behind and taken to a wooded area near Kirkbie Kendal School's all-weather pitch and sexually assaulted between 22:30 and 23:00 GMT.

Two boys aged 13 from Appleby, and one aged 12 from Kendal, were bailed.

Police believe a number of people were using the path following a nearby firework display and are appealing for information.

Det Ch Insp Bob Qazi said: "The attack happened shortly after local firework displays so the area will have been busier than usual.

"We understand that something or someone nearby may have disturbed them which made them run away from the scene so please think back.

"The victim... is understandably shaken up after her frightening ordeal. She is being supported by her family and specially-trained police officers."
