Woman, 71, dies after being hit by car in Bigrigg

A 71-year-old woman has died after being hit by a car outside a church in west Cumbria.

Emergency services were called to the A595 outside the entance to St John's Church, at Bigrigg, south of Whitehaven, at 10:40 GMT.

The pedestrian was taken to the West Cumberland Hospital where she died from her injuries. No further details have been released.

The road was closed for four hours for investigations.

Cumbria Police are appealing for any witnesses to contact them
