Thieves blamed for phones blackout in Cumbria

Would-be metal thieves are being blamed for damage to phone lines in Cumbria, which resulted in thousands of BT customers unable to make calls.

Fibre optic cables near Workington were damaged by thieves who mistakenly believed they contained copper.

People in Harrington, Cockermouth, Bootle, Holmrook, Barrow and Silverdale either lost or had intermittent use of landline phones.

BT said all customers had now been reconnected.

Cumbria Police are investigating.
