Alston homes without electricity after strong winds

Hundreds of homes in a Cumbria town were left without electricity for a time after bad weather damaged overhead cables.

Electricity North West said that engineers had managed to restore power to more than 400 properties in Alston after it failed in the early hours.

About 100 homes remain without any electricity and two schools, Alston Primary and Samuel King's are shut.

Heavy snow has also led to the closure of the A686 at Hartside Pass.

The road is impassable between Alston and Melmerby.
