Canoeist dies after being rescued from Cumbrian river

A North Yorkshire canoeist who was rescued from a river in Cumbria on New Year's Day has died in hospital.

Catherine Stainsby, 41, was with several friends when she got into difficulties at Hobdale Beck on the River Rawthey near Sedbergh.

Mrs Stainsby, from Swinton, near Malton, was pulled from the water by rescuers and airlifted to hospital.

A Cumbria Police spokeswoman said Mrs Stainsby died in hospital on Tuesday. The coroner has been informed.
