A tourist information centre in Cumbria which faced the axe after the council withdrew funding is to be taken over by a community group.

Eden District Council has been working with the Upper Eden Community Interest Group in a bid to ensure the service in Kirby Stephen could stay open.

Following the formation of the community group, volunteers are being sought to run the centre.

It is hoped it will be able to operate from Easter.

Eden District Council, which is a Conservative and Independent coalition with a Conservative leader, needs to save £1.1m over four years.

Councillor Malcolm Smith, portfolio holder for planning and economy, said: "We have been working in partnership on these plans and they are now coming to fruition.

"The council will continue to support the community group to provide the services which are vital to the tourist industry of the Upper Eden area."
