Extra Carlisle primary school places funded

An extra 1,200 primary school places in Cumbria are to be created in a £13m scheme.

An initial 176 additional spaces will increase as the expanded year group progresses through the school system.

About £8.8m will go towards expanding Pennine Way Primary School in Harraby, with the rest of the funding increasing capacity at 10 schools.

Kingmoor Junior and Kingmoor Infant School, will also be expanded after a proposal to merge the two was rejected.

Cumbria County Council's Duncan Fairbairn, the cabinet member for schools and learning, said: "It means our schools are going to be equipped to meet the growing demand for places."
