Pair rescued from Irish Sea after yacht engine fails

Two people on board a yacht have been rescued off the west Cumbrian coast after their vessel's engine failed in gale force winds.

The 41ft (12.5m) yacht broke down in the Irish Sea approximately 11 miles (17.7km) from St Bees Head.

Lifeboats from Barrow and Workington along with a rescue helicopter were dispatched to help recover the boat and crew from turbulent seas.

The yacht crew were suffering from hypothermia and sea sickness.

The coastguard said the alert was raised at 16:30 BST on Tuesday. The vessel and crew had been recovered by 21:00.
