Health drive targets Barrow football fans

Football fans are to be offered health checks while attending matches at a Cumbria club.

Health officials have worked with Barrow AFC to target men aged between 18 and 50, who are the least likely to visit their GP with health concerns.

The "healthy Bluebirds" programme offers information on cancer screening and advice on mental health, community safety and stopping smoking.

Blood pressure checks will also be available during the football season.

Dr Geoff Joliffe, from NHS Cumbria, said: "Most men can be a bit reluctant to go and see a doctor unless they can't put if off anymore.

"Therefore it's up to us as the NHS to make health advice easier to access, understand and available in the right places.

"Hopefully it might help a few people make simple changes to their lifestyle which will benefit their health in the longer term."
