Relative held in Ambleside woman murder probe

A man arrested on suspicion of murdering a 77-year-old Cumbrian woman is a relative, police have said.

Jane Archbold was found injured in her home in Outgate, south of Ambleside at about 22:00 BST on Tuesday, Cumbria Police said.

She had been assaulted and, despite efforts by the ambulance service to resuscitate her, died.

A 48-year-old man from the Ambleside area was arrested nearby after a search involving dogs and a police helicopter.

Cumbria Police said Ms Archbold lived in the "relatively isolated" house with members of her wider family.

A spokeswoman said: "A man remains in police custody on suspicion of murder, while police continue with their inquiries.

"Police are able to confirm that the man arrested was related to the victim."

They expect to formally identify the woman later and are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with the death.

A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out on Thursday.
