A new palliative care unit will help patients manage their pain better so they can be discharged home, hospital chiefs said.

More than £250,000 has been spent on the four-bedroom unit where patients will be assessed at West Cumberland Hospital.

All the rooms are en suite and visitors and family members will be able to stay the night at the unit.

The centre will also care for day patients needing blood transfusions.

Esther Kirby, deputy director of nursing for the Cumbria Partnership Foundation Trust, said: "There are some patients that have very complex symptoms or severe pain that cannot be managed without specialist knowledge and who require an intensive period of assessment, care and/ or psychological support.

"The aim of specialist palliative care is to support a patient to be discharged and cared for in their home environment and to have the best quality of life."
