A new 'super prison' capable of housing more than 2,000 inmates could be built in Cumbria.

The county council is exploring the possibility of the jail being built on unused parts of a munitions depot site at Longtown.

A deadline for expressions of interest to the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) passed on Friday.

The MoJ will now write to all interested parties requesting further information.

A new prison is expected to be built in London, north-west England or Wales.

Cumbria County Council said full consultation would take place if the site advances to the next stage.

About 300 people are employed at the munitions depot which has been threatened with closure.

A decision on its future is expected in the summer.
