Lorry ban on mine collapse Newton Road in Cumbria

Lorries have been banned from a Cumbrian road hit by a suspected mine collapse.

Traffic restrictions have been in place on Newton Road in Newton in Furness since October while the extent of the collapse and damage is assessed.

Now Cumbria County Council has banned vehicles weighing more than 7.5 tonnes as a precaution after a "deep void" was detected under the carriageway.

Traffic chiefs said it was not known how long the restriction would stay.

A council spokesman said: "Geotechnical survey work has revealed a deep void below the carriageway of the road.

"However, the ground immediately below the road surface - to a depth of at least seven metres - has been found to be stable and free of voids and is showing no signs of collapse.

"Nevertheless, the weight restriction is being introduced for HGVs as a safety precaution and a diversion is in place.

"Further survey work will be necessary to determine the options for repair and remedial work."
