Coniston death swimmer named as Matthew Joseph

A man who died after getting into difficulties while swimming in the Lake District has been named by Cumbria Police.

Matthew Oliver Joseph, 21, of Harold Hill, Romford, London, died after he was airlifted to the Royal Preston Hospital on Sunday.

He had earlier been rescued from Coniston Water after he was seen "in distress".

Mr Joseph had been swimming with friends.

Police said the group and other members of the public had attempted to help him.

Mr Joseph was pulled from the water by a rescue boat.

His death is not being treated as suspicious and the details have been passed to the coroner for the South Lakeland area.
