An "utterly depraved" West Cumbrian man, who sexually abused a schoolgirl, has been jailed for 12 years.

Joseph Moody, from Whitehaven, had denied eight specimen charges of sexual activity with a child and two counts of abuse when the girl was seven.

But a jury at Carlisle Crown Court found the 58-year-old guilty of all charges and of downloading more than 6,500 indecent images of children.

Judge Paul Batty said the offences were an "appalling catalogue of abuse."

The court heard all the offences occurred in the Workington area up to 2013.

Branding Moody, of Scotch Street, Whitehaven, an "utterly depraved" individual, Judge Batty also placed him on the sex offenders register for life.

After the hearing, Det Sgt Hayley Wilkinson of Cumbria Police said: "Moody used his position of trust to enable him to abuse his victim.

"The courage the victim has shown was a credit to them and their strength.

"We encourage everyone to report any signs of abuse and unusual behaviour."
