A sex attacker, who flushed his victim's mobile phone down a toilet so she could not call for help, has been jailed for nine years.

Michael Graham hid in the 27-year-old woman's bedroom in Maryport before attacking her last September, Carlisle Crown Court was told.

Graham, of no fixed address, admitted sexual assault, trespass with intent to commit assault and criminal damage.

Cumbria Police described the 25-year-old's actions as "shocking".

The court heard how Graham broke into the woman's home on 3 September and hid in her bedroom before subjecting her to a prolonged sexual assault.

He flushed the woman's phone down the toilet before launching his attack to prevent her calling for help.

After the hearing, Det Con Emma Davidson of Cumbria Police said: "Graham's actions were shocking, particularly as the attack happened in the victim's own home.

"She was unaware he had broken into her house and was waiting for her.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank the victim for her bravery in reporting this incident, and I hope this case encourages others to come forward if they have been victims of sexual or physical assaults."
