999 calls halted in west Cumbria because of fault

More than 2,500 householders in west Cumbria are unable to dial 999 because of a fault with telephone landlines.

Cumbria Police said the fault with the BT service would not be fixed until 22:00 GMT, and areas affected included Cleator Moor, Harrington and Workington.

A spokesman said officers were patrolling affected areas in case of emergencies.

He added that the fault was not affecting mobile phones.
