A Cumbrian man has been jailed for 20 years for a string of "evil" child sex offences, including rape.

Paul Davies, of no fixed address, but formerly of Ulverston, carried out the offences between February 2014 and April 2015, Preston Crown Court heard.

The 54-year-old admitted two counts of rape of a girl under 13, four counts of inciting a girl under 13 to engage in sexual activity and eight sex assaults.

Cumbria Police said the case was one of the most shocking it had come across.

'Frightened and embarrassed'

The court was told Davies was arrested in April last year after being caught attacking his victim.

Det Sgt Fae Dilks said after sentencing: "This is one of the most shocking cases of prolonged sexual abuse that we have come across.

"Davies preyed on the innocence of a child and made his victim feel so frightened and embarrassed that she could not disclose what was happening to her.

"This was an evil and prolonged case of abuse and our thoughts are with the victim who was subjected to a terrifying ordeal."

Davies was told he would be subject to an indefinite sexual offender prevention order and was ordered to sign the sex offenders register.
