Community theatre opens in High Peak in Derbyshire

A £2.5m theatre has opened in Buxton in Derbyshire's High Peak district next to the town's opera house.

The theatre has a 462-seat main stage and a smaller 93-seat studio theatre.

The arts centre's chief executive Andrew Aughton said the theatre will not compete with the opera house as it will feature children's entertainment and community productions.

The smaller suite theatre can also be used for fairs, banquets and other events.

The first production was a play called Laurel and Hardy.

The theatre is located in the Pavilion Gardens complex which also has a 23-acre garden as well as a café and crafts and art gallery.
