Dog-walker dies in frozen Erewash canal

A 42-year-old dog-walker has died after slipping through the ice on a frozen canal, police have said.

Officers were called by the man's family who found him in the Erewash canal near Fields Farm Lane, Long Eaton, on Friday morning.

They went out to look for him after he failed to come home from taking the dog out for a walk.

Det Insp Mark Argyle, from Derbyshire Police, said the death was not being treated as suspicious.

It is not yet known how the man came to be in the canal and a file is being prepared for the coroner, the detective added.

The towpath next to the canal was cordoned off for three hours while officers from Derbyshire Police examined the scene.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact police.
