Separate crashes close part of M1 in Derbyshire

The M1 had to be closed in both directions in Derbyshire after two separate accidents.

A lorry collided with several vehicles and hit the central reservation at Sutton Scarsdale at about 0130 GMT.

The M1 was closed between junctions 29 and 29a southbound and junctions 29 and 30 northbound until 1000 GMT.

In an earlier crash, a woman, 46, was killed when her vehicle hit the central reservation just south of junction 29, at about 1850 GMT on Wednesday.

Both north and southbound carriageways were closed for about six hours as a result.

In Thursday's accident, the HGV was travelling southbound but broke through the the central barrier and ended up on the northbound carriageway.

Five people were taken to Chesterfield Royal Hospital, two with serious injuries, police said.

Derbyshire Police want anyone who witnessed either accident to contact them.
