Derby woman fined over bogus robbery claim

A Derby woman has been fined for falsely claiming to have been robbed in the street.

The 23-year-old reported she had been punched and had her mobile phone taken in Borrowash Road, Spondon, last month.

Police said investigations by the Derby Robbery Unit found the allegations had been made up.

The woman was then arrested, interviewed and issued with a fixed penalty notice of £80 for wasting police time.

Det Insp Mark Argyle, of Derbyshire Constabularly, said: "We take all reports of robbery seriously and ensure they are investigated thoroughly.

"In this particular report the person concerned chose to give a false statement to the investigating officers, this may be considered as an attempt to pervert the course of justice or wasting police time.

"An immediate fine of £80 was issued for this. It is frustrating as we have wasted our resources investigating this incident when we could have been using them on behalf of a genuine victim of crime."
