Public appeal over Erewash benefit fraud

Benefit fraud is being targeted in Derbyshire, with officials asking the public for help.

Erewash Borough Council said it had prosecuted 21 benefit cheats, issued 57 cautions and identified £208,000 plus of overpaid benefits last year.

The authority said much of this was down to information from the public.

Now it emphasised those who give information do not have to give personal details and will be saving money for other services.

Councillor David Stephenson, the council's lead member for resources, said: "There is nothing to fear in reporting your suspicions as all information given is dealt with in the strictest confidence.

"It is vital that we stamp out benefit fraud and with your help our investigation team can bring all proven benefit offences to a successful conclusion."
