Detectives have appealed for information about a small fire near a block of flats in Derby where a woman's body was found.

Police said the fire may have been started to dispose of items.

Catherine Leighton, 54, was found dead at her home in Merrill Way in Allenton just after midnight on 30 April.

Terry Higgins, 24, of Derby, appeared before magistrates in the city on Monday morning charged with her murder.

He was remanded in custody and will appear at Nottingham Crown Court on Wednesday.

Det Ch Insp Sam Slack, of Derbyshire Police, said: "We are keen to speak with anyone who may have witnessed a small fire between 9 pm and 1130 pm on Friday evening or anyone who may have found the remains of a fire or other discarded items in the area."

Derbyshire Police have appealed for anyone who saw Ms Leighton on 29 April - the day of the royal wedding - to call them.
