Derbyshire church lead thefts prompt police plea

A spate of lead thefts from churches in Derbyshire has prompted police to appeal for residents to report suspicious activity they see.

In the latest incident, Christ Church, in Church Street, Tintwistle, was targeted some time between 1600 BST on Wednesday and 0930 BST on Thursday.

Police said thieves stole a large amount of lead from the roof.

And a quantity of lead was taken from the porch of St Edmund's Church, in Castle Street, Castleton, on 6 May.

Insp Gareth Meadows, of Derbyshire Police, said: "If you live near a church, or other building which features lead, please be vigilant. If you see anyone acting suspiciously around these buildings, perhaps looking at the roof and guttering, contact police.

"Metal thieves often take lead away in vehicles so I would also ask residents to call us if they see vehicles parked in the grounds of such buildings."
