Police warning over Derby taxi safety
Taxi drivers in Derby have been warned more cars will be stopped after safety checks took 17 off the road.
Police and Derby City Council licensing officers stopped 20 Hackney and private hire taxis during March and another 26 in May.
Vehicles with serious faults were issued with prohibition notices and had their taxi plates removed.
Police said passengers had a right to expect safe taxis and more checks would be made in the near future.
Faults included leaking batteries and defective power steering.
Roads policing officer Pc Lee Simpson said: "This is an ongoing operation and more checks will take place later in the year.
"Taxi drivers need to be aware that we take vehicle defects very seriously and their livelihoods may suffer if a prohibition notice prevents them from driving."
