Detectives investigating an attack on a man in a Nottinghamshire car park have begun to interview the victim to establish what happened.

The 53-year-old was found with head injuries in the McDonald's car park in Lincoln Road, Newark, on Saturday.

He was airlifted to the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham, where his condition is described as stable.

Officers said they were still trying to trace a burgundy "4x4-type" vehicle which left the scene.

The suspect vehicle has been described as either a Mercedes or a Ssangyong Rexton.

The car park and part of Lincoln Road were closed for much of the day and caused widespread congestion.
