Normanton Park suitcase destroyed by bomb squad

Army bomb disposal experts carried out a controlled explosion on a suitcase which turned out to be harmless in a Derby park.

Police were called at about 1500 BST on Monday to the unattended case in Normanton Park, off Warwick Avenue.

The area was cordoned off and some nearby homes evacuated as a precaution, according to Derbyshire Police.

The explosion took place just before 1800 BST and residents were allowed back shortly after.

The suitcase's contents proved to be harmless.
