Car number plates secured in Derbyshire Police scheme

Drivers can get their number plates secured free in a police scheme to combat vehicle crime and fraud.

Derbyshire Police said stolen plates were most commonly used by offenders to leave petrol stations without paying or to avoid motoring fines.

Officers will replace standard licence plate screws with ones which are harder to remove.

Policing teams will be at Halfords in Glossop between 1000 and 1800 BST on 17 July.

Pc Julian Gallagher said: "Having your number plates stolen would be expensive and stressful to sort out.

"It is also an opportunity for motorists to have any other electrical devices, such as sat-navs or mobile phones, security marked and people will able to speak to us about any other concerns or issues they may have."
