Matlock's new £12m Arc Leisure centre has opened its doors to the public for the first time.

The centre, which features two swimming pools, a sports hall and fitness suite, has been built on an area of reclaimed land between Matlock and Darley Dale.

It replaces Matlock Lido which closed after 73 years on 14 August.

Derbyshire Dales District Council described the new facility as the largest single development it had ever undertaken.

The centre, built by Morgan Sindall, also features a dance studio, cafeteria and splash pad.

"It really is a flagship facility," said manager Paul Blakemore.

"I've not seen anything better in Derbyshire, or in fact anywhere in the East Midlands. It's a truly awesome building."
