Derby adult day care centre to shut down

An adult day care centre in Derby is closing down as part of budget cuts at the city council.

City councillors voted to close the Whittaker Road Day Care Centre in a bid to save £290,000 a year.

Elderly people who use the centre will be transferred to the Moreleston Day Care Centre.

About 400 people signed a petition opposing the closure, saying the decrease in popularity was a result of an increase in day charges.

The city council said the day care centre had a lot of spare spaces.

The Labour group said predictions of an aging population meant demand for such centres was likely to grow.

The authority is implementing a £27m, two-year savings plan.
