A man has been told he must serve at least 22 years in jail after being given a life sentence for killing his girlfriend in Derby.

Martin Shaw, 34, of Mayfield Road, Chaddesden, admitted murder after stabbing Danielle Thompson in the house they shared in August.

Nottingham Crown Court heard the attack followed an argument and Shaw fled the scene but was arrested soon after.

Ms Thompson, 22, was taken to Royal Derby Hospital but died later.

Det Insp Dave Cox said: "This was a brutal attack and Shaw stabbed Danielle around 20 times.

"He has then left her for dead on the floor and fled the scene. I cannot imagine what those last few moments of Danielle's life were like.

"The death has greatly affected Danielle's family. I hope that the fact Shaw will now be in prison for a significant amount of time will give some form or peace of mind to them."
