Work to close Derby rat-run begins
Work to close "one of Derby's worst rat-runs" between two city centre main roads is due to begin.
Closing Melbourne Street at the junction with Osmaston Road would stop drivers using it as a cut-through and improve the quality of life for residents, Derby City Council said.
Osmaston Road should not be affected by the road works and delays are not predicted.
The project begins on Monday and is expected to be completed in two weeks.
Councillor Chris Poulter, cabinet member for neighbourhoods, said: "The closure of the junction will put an end to one of the city's worst rat-runs and will drastically improve the quality of lives for residents of Melbourne Street.
"By carrying out these types of improvements to Derby's roads, the council is meeting its objective to make our city more attractive to residents."
The work follows a public consultation in which nearly 80% of residents said they were in favour of Melbourne Street being closed.
