A murder investigation is under way after the death of a 48-year-old man in Derbyshire.

Police were called to Canal Street, Ilkeston, at around 21:00 GMT on Wednesday after reports of a disturbance at a house.

They said a man had been assaulted and could not be saved by paramedics.

Two men, described as white, one in his 30s and one in his 40s, were seen leaving the scene. Police are carrying out house to house inquiries.

A post-mortem examination is due to take place on Thursday.

Neighbours said they had alerted police after becoming worried by noises coming from the house.

Michael Skinner said: "I was the one that called 999 and the police responded within a couple of minutes.

"They immediately saw the seriousness of the situation and more police vehicles came."
