Pedestrian hit by car outside Renishaw club dies

Police are seeking witnesses after a pedestrian died on Christmas Eve when he was struck by a car in Derbyshire.

The 60-year-old was hit by a silver Peugeot estate car in Main Road outside the Working Men's Club in Renishaw at about 18:00 GMT on Tuesday.

A Derbyshire Police spokesman said the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The East Midlands Serious Collision Investigation Unit want to hear from anyone who saw the incident.

    East Midlands Airport says two flights have been diverted to them overnight - from Brussels and Gran Canaria - because the aircraft were not able to land at other airports.

    Two outbound flights, to Aberdeen and Edinburgh, have been cancelled this morning because the aircraft did not arrive in the East Midlands yesterday.

    All other flights are unaffected, although the airport says everything is "a little bit slower than usual" because the aircraft need to be de-iced.

    Many schools are texting parents to let them know of school closures.

    Thomas Alleyne's High School in Uttoxeter says buses are unable to get in, and there is a lorry blocking the main road.

    He says although it is not actually snowing yet, overnight weather means the travel situation is awful and he has heard of many accidents making matters worse.

    The centre of Stoke-on-Trent is gridlocked, callers to the station say.

    Roads have been deemed too dangerous for pupils and staff to use by many schools, while some, like Werrington Primary, are completely inaccessible because of deep snow drifts.

    The affected areas are mainly in the Moorlands.
